Finnegan falis antaŭ aliaj okazoj, antaŭe priskribitaj, kaj tia tempa elemento kuŝas en malklara angla. Klarigu ĝin esperante.

Finnegan fell before other events,
already written about, and the time element
is hidden in obscure English.
Let's make it clear with Esperanto.

Jen, la originala angla

riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

Sir Tristram, violer d’amores, fr’over the short sea, had passen-core rearrived from North Armorica on this side the scraggy isthmus of Europe Minor to wielderfight his penisolate war: nor had topsawyer’s rocks by the stream Oconee exaggerated themselse to Laurens County’s gorgios while they went doublin their mumper all the time: nor avoice from afire bellowsed mishe mishe to tauftauf thuartpeatrick: not yet, though venissoon after, had a kidscad buttended a bland old isaac: not yet, though all’s fair in vanessy, were sosie sesthers wroth with twone nathandjoe. Rot a peck of pa’s malt had Jhem or Shen brewed by arclight and rory end to the regginbrow was to be seen ringsome on the aquaface.

The fall (bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonner-
ronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthur- nuk!)
of a once wallstrait oldparr is retaled early in bed
and later on life down through all christian minstrelsy. 1

kaj, la Esperanto:

riverkuro, preter preĝejo “Eve kaj Adam”, de bordo kurba ĉe golfeto
fleksita, alportas nin per agrablaj cirkonstancoj kaj recikladeco,
denove alkastele “Howth” ĉirkaŭaĵa ekeĉo. 2
istmo, Eŭropo Minora, manprenbatali lian militon penizolatan: 3
nek ĉefulaj rokoj “Sawyer” ĉe la fluo “Oconee”
troigis sin mem al ne-ciganoj en distrikto
“Laurens” kiam ili iris petante duoblan
nombron ilian tut-tempe: 4
nek voĉo elfajra balgblekis muĝe,
muĝe albapti vin malpetruze:
ne tiam, sed baldaŭ ĉasaĵoj poste,
plej junul’ estis igonte blindan Isaakon: 5
ne tiam, kvankam tute justas, fratinaj
petoluloj estis koleronte je du-unu nat-johano. 6

Jen, tie Joyce skribis “nor”, la internacia lingvo uzas la vorton “nek”:

nor had…rocks…exaggerated themselse
nek ĉefulaj rokoj…troigis sin mem

kaj,

nor avoice from afire bellowsed
nek voĉo elfajra balgblekis

Joyce skribis “not yet”, kaj Esperanto estas skribita “ne tiam”:

not yet, though venissoon after, had a kidscad buttended…
ne tiam, sed baldaŭ ĉasaĵoj poste, plej junul’ estis igonte…

kaj,

not yet, though all’s fair…were sosie sesthers wroth
ne tiam, kvankam tute justas…fratinaj petoluloj estis koleronte

Plue, ekvidu kiel la angla “not yet,…were…wroth” estas tradukita alesperante “ne tiam,…estis koleronte”. Joyce volis klarigi ke Finnegan falis antaŭ tiaj aliaj okazoj.

Look, where Joyce writes "nor", the international
language uses the word "nek". Joyce writes
"not yet", and Esperanto is written "ne tiam".
In addition, notice how the English
"not yet,...were...wroth" is translated
to Esperanto "ne tiam,...estis koleronte".
And the English "had a kidscad buttended..."
is translated to "plej junul' estis igonte..."
in Esperanto. Joyce wants to make clear that
Finnegan fell before these other events.

Bonvolu, notu kiel Joyce uzis helposignojn. Jen, Joyce skribas unu frazon, finiĝita per unu punkto, kun kvin okazoj.

Please note how Joyce uses punctuation.
Here, Joyce writes one whole sentence
with five events, finished with one period.

  • Sir Tristram…had passen-core rearrived…war:
  • nor had…rocks…all the time:
  • nor avoice…bellowsed…thuartpeatrick:
  • not yet,…had a kidscad buttended…isaac:
  • not yet,…were…wroth…nathandjoe.

alesperante

  • Sinjoro Tristram…ankoraŭ estis revenonte…militon:
  • nek…rokoj…troigis sin mem…tut-tempe:
  • nek voĉo…balgblekis…malpetruze:
  • ne tiam,…plej junul’ estis igonte…Isaakon:
  • ne tiam,…estis koleronte…nat-johano.

Kaj, tiu paragrafo plie havas duan frazon kun alia tempa elemento.

Rot a peck of pa’s malt had Jhem or Shen
brewed by arclight and rory end to the regginbrow
was to be seen ringsome on the aquaface.

Do, tradukis “was to be seen” kiel “estis ekvidata”, kaj “Rot a peck…” kiel “Putru iom da…”; ĉu en tiu frazo ni vidas ion farante samtempe kiam la falo okazos?

And, that paragraph also has a second
sentence with another time element.
So, "was to be seen" is translated as
"estis ekvidata", and "Rot a peck..."
as "Putru iom da..."; so, in this sentence
do we see something happening at
the same time as the fall will occur?
And, what is this fall anyway?
We need to know who is Finnegan!
Is he the same as us?
No, we live, he dies.
The book is his funeral/wake,
and now we take part in it!
But, ironically, the book is
considered to be a dream.
Why are we dreaming about
Finnegan? Because we can?
